Separate three kinds of claim
A work may depict café life; a document may mention drinking; a later writer may use absinthe as a symbol. These claims can coexist without proving the same thing.
Start with the object
For a painting or drawing, check title, date, medium, ownership history, and catalogue context. Then distinguish what is visible from what a caption or later anecdote adds.
Keep biography proportional
